Dear Author,
May I take a moment of your time to tell you about some exciting developments at Westminster John Knox Press and Geneva Press? First, let me thank you for being an author and contributor to our publishing program. We recognize that our authors are the key component in the continuation of a publishing tradition that is marked by excellent works.
We are pleased to be enjoying a very good year of sales. We attribute some of this success in 2007 to new volumes that were published from authors such as Walter Brueggemann, Cynthia Campbell, Beverly Roberts Gaventa, Frances Taylor Gench, William Placher, Rowan Williams, and Will Willimon. In 2008, our list includes new works from Frederick Buechner, Catherine and Justo González, Thomas G. Long, the late Letty Russell, Brian Wren, and Tom Wright.
WJK is particularly pleased to announce several major new projects that involve numerous writers, editors, and contributors. A new preaching commentary, Feasting on the Word, is intended for those who preach using the Revised Common Lectionary. This is a groundbreaking series of twelve volumes published over three years. The general editors, Barbara Brown Taylor and David Bartlett, are backed by a stellar editorial team and Columbia Theological Seminary. These books feature writings on four distinct perspectives for each lection and will include contributions from hundreds of top scholars and preachers. The series promises to be an invaluable and unparalleled tool for biblical preaching.
Also, in 2008, WJK will publish The Discipleship Study Bible. Using the NRSV translation, this study Bible helps readers journey faithfully through the Scriptures both as individuals and as members of the Christian community. The editorial team of Bruce Birch, Brian Blount, Tom Long, Gail O’Day, and Sibley Towner assembled a prestigious group of contributors to complete this volume.
You may also be aware of a new ecumenical online religious education program available for adults called TheThoughtfulChristian.com. This new service has been incredibly well received and offers short-term studies on a variety of topics, including Bible study, spirituality, Christian living, contemporary issues, and popular culture. A youth component will be unveiled in early 2008.
Other future projects include a new thirty-six volume series of theological commentaries on the Bible that will offer a unique approach for the study, teaching, and preaching of Scripture. Amy Pauw and William Placher are serving as the general editors. Another newly organized editorial advisory team that includes Ellen Armour, Wendy Farley, David Jensen, Anne Joh, Stephen Ray, and Miguel de la Torre will consider noteworthy new texts on emerging theological issues.
This is just a sampling of the many exciting new works and series now under development. In many cases you’ll recognize yourself as a participant and contributor in one or more of these exciting projects, but if you don’t, we hope that you will consider WJK and Geneva in your future publishing plans.
WJK and Geneva have the finest editorial team in religious publishing. There have been some recent changes of interest in the editorial staff for WJK and Geneva, so please let me alert you to those. David Dobson now serves in a new role as the Acting Director of Publishing and heads up the editorial staff.
