From the Publisher's Desk

Greetings! Welcome to the fall 2009 author newsletter. We are so appreciative that you have chosen to contribute to our publishing program.

It is a difficult time for many people all around the world. This economic period seems the worst of my lifetime and I'm not exactly a youngster. The bookselling environment has been particularly effected as many fine bookstores have shut their doors and many others are just holding on and hoping for better days to return. In addition, there are natural and sometimes very exciting changes that are occurring in how content can best be delivered to our users and constituents. We are working to cope with the difficulties in the marketplace and plan for future innovations for content delivery. The future seems to be arriving at an ever-faster pace.

Westminster John Knox and the Presbyterian Publishing Corporation have not been immune to the economic realities, although we've seemed to keep our balance better than most religious publishers. Still, we have made some necessary changes, including our decision to publish slightly fewer books for the next two years. This will allow us to focus more of our attention on those books that will provide the best service to our audience while making the best use of our resources.

At the same time, we continue to progress and innovate in both traditional publishing and new strategic directions. The Feasting on the Word lectionary commentary series featuring General Editors David L. Bartlett and Barbara Brown Taylor continues to garner rave reviews and a steadily increasing number of users. We are pleased to have several other soon-to-be-announced follow-up projects in the works that grow from this exciting stream of resources.

In 2010 we will publish seventy new works including new volumes by wonderful authors and contributors such as Sharon L. Baker, Kathleen Long Bostrom, William Brosend, Walter Brueggemann, Craig Detweiler, James D. G. Dunn, John Goldingay, Justo L. González, Donald L. Griggs, the late Ogbu U. Kalu, Eunjoo Mary Kim, Alyce M. McKenzie, the late William C. Placher, Richard N. Soulen, Leonora Tubbs Tisdale, Louis B. Weeks, Ann Weems, William H. Willimon, and many other gifted writers. Thanks to all of you for publishing with us. (I would gladly mention each of our valued authors but I have a restricted word count!)

We also continue to offer new studies through TheThoughtfulChristian.com, and this summer launched ThePresbyterianLeader.com, which is gaining new subscribers daily. Work is under way to develop WJKAcademic.com, a Web site for the academic community that will make many of our top academic books available in digital form; allow users to create course packs from WJK material, including by chapter or essay; and give us opportunities to provide new content in book and journal form.

As we face these challenging but exciting times together, please don't hesitate to contact me, our editors, our sales and marketing team, or our author relations and publicity staff with your thoughts. We are grateful to be your publishing partner. I hope that you find this newsletter a helpful and encouraging source of information.

With warmest regards,
